Hikers Safe Thanks to GPS Technology

Cell phone GPS tracking allowed officials to guide an area woman and two children out of the wooded area along Meriden Mountain, police and fire officials said.

Area hikers learned the importance of technology on Monday evening – especially when it was that technology that saved them from being lost overnight in the woods along the east side of town.

Fire officials said Tuesday morning that use of a cell phone helped local officials guide a hiker and her two children out of the wooded area surrounding after they became lost while hiking along Meriden Mountain following dinnertime.

Capt. John Folcik, fire officials said after she called for help just before 9 p.m., her phone coordinates were used to pinpoint her location.

The group had wandered to an area near the Meriden line, police said. Meriden police and fire officials entered from the opposite side and were located the woman and two children, ages 6 and 8. Their names have not been released.

No one was injured on the hike.
