Southington Rest Area Slated for Closure

Two Highway Rest Areas Set to Close on July 1, With Five More to Close Within Two Years.

The state Department of Transportation has announced it will close two rest areas on I-84 in Willington on July 1, and that the Southington rest area will be among five others closed by June 2013.

The closing of the two Willlington rest areas will save an estimated $400,000 in the next fiscal year, according to the DOT.  Five more non-commercial rest areas, in Southington,  Danbury, Middletown, Stonington and Wallingford, will be closed during the following fiscal year, between July 2012 and June 2013, to save another $900,000 annually, the press release said.

The state maintains the areas where drivers can pull off the highway for rest, restrooms and snack machines. The Southington rest area is just past Exit 38 on I-84 East.
