Community Corner

Giving Thanks to Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Southington

Scouting for Food ... "it's what Scouts do now, I mean nationally", said Jim Dinnan, a leader at Troop 17 BSA in Southington.

Joanne Kelleher, leader of Southington Troop 32 spoke of the many tasks the boys and their parents did in assisting in the town-wide annual food drive for Southington Community Services and Bread for Life, that no one may go hungry.

"These youngsters from every troop and pack in Southington were out there doing their part, putting up yellow colored bags in all the neighborhoods they could cover on a Saturday this fall, returning the next Saturday to collect six tons of food ao generously donated by residents of Southington so that Bread for Life and Southington Community Services might feed the hungry."

Executor Director of Bread for Life, Eldon Hafford spoke of the shut-ins who are home-bound, the seniors living in town-subsidized housing, those who come to Bread for Life for a daily hot and nutritious meal at noon on weekdays and take home a packaged meal for later, and the hot breakfast BFL provides at school for children whose families are living in poverty.  Janet Mellon, Director of Southington Community Services told us that the Food Pantry was able to present Thanksgiving Food Baskets including a turkey and all the trimmings to six hundred families who might have gone without a holiday dinner.

The good work of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America in Scouting for Food deserves our deep gratitude as do those in the scouting movement who voluntarily give their time to organize, coordinate, lead and teach leadership and good citizenship to our boys, men of the future of the United States.

Join us in saluting and honoring our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
