Bringing the Community Together - Are You In?

A campaign over the next six weeks will challenge residents to think about what the phrase "are you in?" means to them and encourage community unity and support for Southington youth.

“Are You In?”

It’s a question that over the past two years has developed into a motto for STEPS, the Southington Town-wide Effort to Promote Success, but as members of the organization look to further strengthen support and unity in the community, they are challenging area residents to think critically on how they can become more involved.

“When you hear the phrase, we know it means something different to everyone,” said Kelly Leppard, youth prevention coordinator with STEPS. “We began spreading the signs in April and over the next two months, we will be revealing five generic messages on how people can help make a positive difference.”

The signs began sprouting up around the first of April in town and already, many businesses and organizations have embraced the effort.

There are now several hundred signs spread around the community, from government buildings like Southington Town Hall and the municipal center to countless businesses such as Smokin’ With Chris and even private homes.

The campaign will begin unveiling new messages at many of these locations starting May 1, with the messages designed to create a more inquisitive and active community, Leppard and STEPS Assistant Evelyn Ciaburri each said.

“If we can get residents or business owners to think for a moment about how they could help, then the campaign has done its job,” Leppard said. “We simply want people to think critically. Maybe it means, for business owners, they offer internships and opportunities for our children.”

Stay tuned to Southington Patch over the next several weeks as the messages are revealed and tell us, what does the phrase “Are You In?” mean to you?
