Harlem Rockets Coming to Southington for ‘Family Fun Night’

The Southington Drug Task Force is hosting a special event designed to provide fun family bonding and support anti-drug efforts throughout the community – and they are bringing some friends along to join in the fun.

The Harlem Rockets are coming to Southington, basketball and comedy with them, to spread a message of the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle.

Students in Southington schools will receive a visit from members of the Harlem Rockets, a professional comedy and entertainment-based basketball team, on Thursday before Southington High School students, staff and members of the Southington Police Department and Southington Fire Department test their skills in a “can’t miss” basketball game at 7 p.m. at the high school.

The fundraiser, open to the public, will cost $6 for students and seniors and $7 for adults and is sponsored by the Southington Drug Task Force. Proceeds will go toward sponsoring anti-drug events and programs throughout the community, Trish Kenefick said.

“Our game plan is to have as much fun, be as breathtaking as possible and really, to make sure we are not getting anyone hurt,” said Southington Town Manager Garry Brumback, who has been tapped to coach Southington’s team in the charity basketball game. “It’s bound to be a lot of fun and we just hope to be a good source of entertainment.”

The Southington Drug Task Force, an organization now over 30-years-old, is a regular partner in helping town youth make good decisions, develop strong character and grow to their full potential by choosing a drug-free lifestyle.

The group regularly partners with STEPS, the Southington Board of Education, the Southington-Cheshire YMCA and more.

Kenefick said in an email Tuesday that the program will host messages of remaining, drug, alcohol and tobacco free, staying in school, avoiding peer pressure, building self-esteem and more.

“We don’t have a greater partnership than the Southington Drug Task Force and their years of service in this community,” Brumback said. “Anything we can do to distract our kids for a moment and promote the importance of avoiding drugs is something you just have to be a part of. It’s sure to be a fun time.”
