Oscar is Southington's 'Top Dog!'

The Labrador mix, part of the Folcik family, was selected from a pool of over 2,000 licensed pets in town during the 20th annual drawing Friday.

"Oscar" can claim something in 2013 that no other pet in town can - he is the winner of the 20th annual Southington Top Dog drawing.

The Labrador mix belonging to John Folcik and his family was selected from a group of over 2,000 licensed dogs during the annual drawing in the Southington Town Clerk's office Friday.

“The idea originally started as a way of encouraging owners to register their pets,” said Leslie Cotton, who took over the role of Southington Town Clerk in 1993. “We had just started to allow dog licensing through the mail in 1994 and we wanted to promote it. It’s been a popular contest ever since.”

Cotton said local dog owners look forward to the contest every year now in hopes that their dog will be crowned one of "Southington’s TOP DOGS!"

The contest is simple; just license your dog as required by state and local laws and the dog is entered to win. In 2012, Daisy Spencer was selected as the annual winner.

Chosen second in the 2013 lottery was "Yeti," a Great Pyreness belonging to Marcy DeCerb. Mary Thadieo's Pomeranian "Miya" was selected as the second runner-up.
