Pizza, Pizza: And the Winner Is…

The banquet hall at Hawk's Landing Country Club was filled to capacity Wednesday evening as hundreds of residents from across the community took part in the Southington Chamber of Commerce.

Steak Gorgonzola, Lasagna, Buffalo Chicken – it may sound like a menu from a high end restaurant but the reality is these were just a few of the many original and tasty pizzas available at the annual Southington Camber of Commerce Pizza Fest.

The annual contest to crown the best pizza in Southington drew a crowd of more than 600 to Hawk’s Landing Thursday night as residents from throughout the area came to taste the best pies from some of the communities top restaurants.

“It’s great to get the kids out and it’s a dinner we know they’ll all like,” said Kurt Arsenault, who attended the event with his sons Nolan, Greyson and Thor.

The popular contest has grown in recent year, setting a new record with more than 550 people coming through in just the first hour in 2013, and Chamber Women members Julie Chubit and Cathy Zalaski said the proceeds benefit several good causes.

The event served as one of several fundraisers for the Chamber Women, who use profits to support the town’s annual adopt-a-family program and also sponsor a college scholarship for a Southington High School senior girl who takes part in the school’s Distributive Education Clubs of America.

“It’s a great community event and the program benefits the community in so many ways,” Chubit said. “We have more people coming out each year and we have to give special thanks to the participating restaurants, who donate their time and pizzas all for a good cause.”

And the Winner Is…

The competition was fierce in 2013, but after a hard fought battle, “Best Overall” was awarded to Bonterra’s Bar & Grill in downtown Southington with their Steak Gorgonzola drawing rave reviews. Bertucci’s was named as the runner-up.

People’s Choice, the popular delivery restaurant on Queen Street, was awarded “Most Original” with Randy’s Wooster Street Pizza earning the runner-up honors.

Other participating restaurants include Price Chopper, Wood-N-Tap, Machiavelli's, Giovanni's, The Fire Place, Bacci's Pizzeria and Zingerella Pizzeria.
