Praying for the Health, Wealth and Happiness of the Community and Nation

Around 40 people came out for Southington's 21st celebration of the National Day of Prayer, and they came with big hearts and high hopes for everyone.

The sun was shining down on the Southington Town Green at noon Thursday as Christians from throughout Southington – and one from Waterbury – joined together in a moment of prayer to celebrate the National Day of Prayer.

“The core of anything is the family,” said the Rev. Victoria Triano, event organizer. “Today, we are taking a few minutes to come together regardless of denomination to pray for everyone.”

Thursday marked the 21st consecutive year that the town has celebrated the annual day of prayer. Nationwide, Catholics of all kinds bowed their head in ceremonies for a day that was first celebrated in May 62 years ago.

Triano said the event has seen it’s highs and lows in Southington, with turnouts reaching over 100 in the past at times and dropping as low as 20 in other ceremonies, but members of the community remain committed to celebrating their religion and heritage.

About 40 people turned out for the celebration Thursday, including students from the St. Thomas School who attended the event for their fifth consecutive year, as town officials and residents honored the town, the country and God.

Nearly a dozen religious organizations were represented at the event.

Prayers were said for public safety officials, government leaders, businessmen and women, the hungry, the elderly, children, various organizations and more as everyone joined together in praying for the health, wealth and happiness of everyone.

Art Secondo, president of the Southington Chamber of Commerce, said the celebration keeps in touch with the roots of Southington and is a reminder of how the town was founded.

“Without the Lord’s blessing, we would not have this great town we live in today,” Secondo said. “Over 200 years ago when the first settlers came, they joined together and the first thing they built was a church. Now we have many thriving churches here today.”
