Southington Apple Harvest Festival: Where to Park and Road Detours

The annual festival draws thousands to downtown Southington, but it also means detours and traffic to accommodate the crowds. Do you know the information necessary to assure you aren't affected?

The 45th annual Apple Harvest Festival promises to bring plenty of opportunity, fun and entertainment to town -- but it also means traffic and people.

Do you have the information you need to avoid heavy traffic, find a parking space and spend more time enjoying what the festival has to offer? Southington Patch is here to help.


From Friday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Oct. 6, and again from Oct. 11 to Oct. 13, detours and no parking orders will be in place, the Southington Police Department and festival organizers reported, in order to keep residents and festival goers safe.

The following streets will be marked with a "no parking sign" during those days:

  • Merrell Avenue
  • Oak Street
  • Academy Lane
  • Academy Street
  • North Liberty Street
  • Vermont Avenue
  • Vermont Terrace
  • High Street
  • Hobart Street
  • Center Street
  • Center Place
  • Center Court
  • Columbus Avenue
  • Eden Avenue
  • Liberty Street
  • Chestnut Street
  • Mill Street (to Water Street)
  • Berlin Avenue (from Main Street to Highwood Avenue)
  • North Main Street (from Center Street to Mill Street)
  • West Center Street (from Summer Street to Howard Avenue)
  • Woodruff Street (from Berlin Avenue to Pleasant Street)


PARADE
With the parade, the following streets will also be closed to parking on Sunday, Oct. 6 (rain date Oct. 13):

  • Summer Street
  • Cowles Avenue
  • Elm Street
  • Church Street
  • Beecher Street
  • Matthews Street
  • Eden Place
  • West Main Street
  • Bristol Street
  • Knowles Avenue
  • Chestnut Street
  • South Center Street
  • Water Street
  • Main Street
  • Prospect Street (from West Street to Summer Street)       
  • Speechley Avenue    


Access to Cowles Avenue, Prospect Street, Summer Street and Elm Street will also be shut down at 11 a.m. on the day of the parade.

These streets will be under the special parking restrictions from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Violators will be subject to a $35 fine and/or towing of the vehicle.

FIREWORKS
The fireworks display will be set off from the Dog Park located on Mill Street on Saturday, Oct. 5. (rain date Oct. 12). The section of Mill Street between North Main Street (Rte. 10) and Water Street will be blocked off starting at noon and reopening at 11 p.m. the same day.

The Dog Park will be CLOSED to the public from noon on Saturday and will reopen at noon on Sunday, Oct. 6. During this time the Rails to Trails will be closed between High Street at the Southington-Cheshire YMCA and the Municipal Center Building.

This will create a safety zone and traffic will be detoured around the Mill Street closure.

The Southington Police Department telephone number 860-378-1600 ext. 9 has been programmed to give the current information regarding hours, parking and detour information for the 2013 Apple Harvest Festival.
