Photos: Durham Pays Tribute to Veterans

The town's Veterans Day service was held Sunday morning at the veterans' memorial.

A crowd of about 150 residents gathered on Durham's town green Sunday morning to honor veterans.

The Veterans Day service included several brief memorial tributes as well as a reading of the origins of Veteran's Day. First Selectman Laura Francis read The Nobel and the Brave, a poem about veterans written by Joanna Fuchs.

The town's flag was lowered to half-staff during the ceremony by Bob Peterson, a retired member of the U.S. Marine Corps and current member of Durham VFW Post 10169.

It has been very heart warming to see such a large turnout for the Veteran's Ceremony over the past two years or so. Much of this appears to be due to the fact that our local boy scouts and cub scouts have become an integral part of this solemn occassion. As a former cub scout leader and local citizen I was proud to see these young men conduct themselves with such dignity and respect. I think our future will be in good hands.
