"Unique" Event To Raise Funds for Southington Community Services

The Unique Boutique event will raise money for local families in need.

There are few events in town where clothing deals, a good meal and the chance to support a good cause can all be found during one evening.

But that's the idea behind the Unique Boutique event, happening Monday, April 25 from 6 to 9 p.m., when the Aqua Turf Club will transform into a clothing shop of sorts to raise money for Southington Community Serivces.

Organizer Kaye Davis said the gently used, name-brand clothing and accessories will be sold at cheap prices, along with a full dinner served at 7 p.m., raffle prizes and a silent auction.

Davis said residents have donated hundreds of items, all currently being cleaned and pressed, to support a cause she beleives in.

"People have been so generous and very supportive of this event since it started four years ago," Davis said. "I think in Southington there is a perception that we don't have a need here, but there is acutally a tremendous need, especially these days."

Community Services Director Janet Mellon said the fundraiser is one of the department's most vital ways of generating funds, which directly benefits local families. Community services helps those in need by providing food baskets and providing fuel, energy and emergency assistance.

"It's a very important event for us, we really hope people come out," Mellon said. "Donations aren't quite what they used to be, but the numbers of people needing help keep going up."

Davis said volunteers like the Calvanese Foundation's Kathy Reinhard and Diane Sheard have been working hard to make the event a success. Last year the Unique Boutique generated $12,000, and Davis is hoping to at least match that number this year.

Clothing left after the event will be donated to community services. Tickets cost $32 and must be purchased in advance by contacting community services at (860) 628-3761 or Davis at (860) 302-8095.

"It's always a fun event, and a great evening," said Davis.
