Last Week's Meetings Recap

A look back at the Public Works and Police Commission meetings last week.

During the week of September 5 - 9, there were two meetings that should be of interest to local residents.

First was the Public Works Committee meeting on Wednesday. Regarding the operations of the Bulky Waste Transfer Station, it was noted that they will be chipping the enormous of brush and branches brought in the prior week. After Hurricane Irene wisely and thankfully the Town opened the site Tuesday through Friday for brush only for resident clean-up.

It was also opened Labor Day weekend Saturday for all debris from the storm. Town Manager Garry Brumback commended Highway Superintendent Steve Wlodkowski for the excellent job done by all members of his department in both pre-storm as well as post-storm activities.

Another discussion topic was the repaving of West Center Street. The road has been patched from the recent work done by the Southington WATER Department. It will be milled & resurfaced from Raynor to West Street this fall. The portion from Raynor down to Summer Street done in the spring of 2012 due to the need to add extensive drainage and catch basins. That section will be completely dug up and regraded and then repaved. It is a delay many will not appreciate, but it is the proper way to solve decades of problems.

Another meeting last week was the Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday The SPD is working with the Disabilities Commission to compile a Special Needs Registry database. The purpose of that is to make available to responding police and fire personnel information on residents/occupants that are blind, deaf, or otherwise handicapped. Further information will be obtained with resident meetings conducted at the Calendar House Senior Center in the next few months.

Finally, there was a discussion regarding motorists passing stopped school buses on local roads as noted on Berlin Avenue Wednesday morning. Despite flassing red lights and a stop sign many motorists put children and parents in danger by passing the school bus! Alert citizens are asked to note the license plate numbers as well as make, model and color of vehicles seen violating this important law and immediately phone the information into the SPD dispatch center at 860-621-0101. The ticket is $480.00!
