The Southington Parking Authority has approved a motion by Mike Riccio and Matt Florian to hold a public hearing on June 8, 2011 for their proposal to allow overnight parking in select Southington municipal parking lots for tenants of downtown property owners.

Current Parking Authority Regulations prohibit overnight parking of vehicles by banning parking between 2am and 5am. Vehicles parked overnight are subject to tickets by the Southington Police Department.

History: Parking Authority instituted this rule years ago due to unregistered and disabled vehicles using the lots as well as problems with overnight lot maintenance and the serious problem of snow removal from November to April.

Proponents of the change argue that some property owners have no available off-street parking for their tenants. Opponents of this change argue that taxpayer funds should not be used to accommodate private parking when they can rent or lease off-street parking from other property owners.
