It’s criminal that ‘Game of Thrones‘ high production value means that we only get ten episodes a year as opposed to HBO’s usual twelve.  And as much of the budget was likely spent on last week’s epic battle of “Blackwater,” wouldn’t you petition King Joffrey for just a few more minutes of sweet ‘Game of Thrones’ action before the season 3 break?  You’re in luck!

In anticipation of the ‘Game of Thrones season 2 finale “Valar Morghulis,” HBO has opted to grant an additional ten minutes to the episode.  ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes usually clock in at about 55 minutes, but this Sunday’s coming finale has an official run-time of 64 minutes.  Be sure to adjust your DVRs!

It remains to be seen where, or to what the additional minutes will be added, as the episode deals with the fallout of last week’s siege of “Blackwater.”  Those who have kept up with the second season know that ‘Game of Thrones’ has quite a bit to presumably wrap up before the 10-month break, including Daenerys’ quest to retrieve her dragons from the “House of the Undying,” Jon Snow’s position now that he’s been captured by the Wildlings, and Theon Greyjoy’s occupation of Winterfell. From the episode’s official press release:

Theon stirs his men to action, and Luwin offers some final advice. Brienne silences Jaime, Arya receives a gift from Jaqen, Dany goes to a strange place, and Jon proves himself to Qhorin.

Seasons 3 and 4 of Game of Thrones will likely feel somewhat less cramped, each tackling one half of George R.R. Martin‘s third ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novel ‘A Storm of Swords.’  But, we wouldn’t mind an additional ten minutes here or there either!

Be careful with your DVR, and be sure to check out the incredible ‘Game of Thrones’ season 2 finale “Valar Morghulis” this Sunday night at 9 on HBO!

I say Penultimate, you say Episode! Penultimate! Episode! Penultimate! Episode!
If you are hep enough to come to Guyism.com you know that the crap always hits the fan during the second-to-last episode of the season. And tonight’s Game of Thrones, “Blackwater,” was no exception.

Neil Marshall, the auteur behind the best things-go-bananas-in-a-specific-place horror film of the past ten years, The Descent, was absolutely the right choice to film Stannis Baratheon’s naval siege on King’s Landing. This is also the first episode written by George R.R. Martin since season one’s “The Pointy End.” (Which is cool and all, but shouldn’t he be busy, you know, working on the next book in case he drops dead?)
Anyway: the Siege!

We open on Stannis’ ships, the sailors looking pensive at best, nauseous at worst, the music ominous. Davos Seaworth jaws with his son, Matthos, reminding him that the Capitol’s walls have never been breached by the sea. The young man, however, has faith in his captain, in the Lord of Light and in the one God.

Varys hears the bells and shivers – they always bring disaster, like war, a dead King. . .”Or a wedding,” Tyrion adds. Tyrion is suiting up for battle, acting surprisingly brave. Varys warns that Stannis brings with him the peculiar powers of the Red Priestess, but Tyrion seems unafraid. Varys, however, seems more than concerned about Stannis’ dealings with the Dark Arts.

The city bells can be heard all the way out by the ships, but Stannis has a comeback – drums!

As Tyrion heads off to battle, he says goodbye to Shae (pretending he hardly knows her) who is with Sansa. She zings him, wishing him the same fate as she wishes for King Joffrey.

Joffrey acts like a big swinging dick and asks Sansa to kiss her sword. She asks if he’ll be in the vanguard, behind the lines. Clearly, he isn’t, but he won’t admit it. She tells him that her Brother Robb, of course, always fights at the front of the lines.

They say it's the quiet ones you have to look out for and during the "Game of Thrones" Battle of Blackwater, Daniel Portman's Podrick Payne proved the rule.

As one of the King's Guard turned on Tyrion during battle, the young man found a Hulk-like strength, and seemingly out of nowhere, leapt up and jammed a spear into the Hand of the King's turncoat attacker.

It was pretty insane. I'd only [done] one day, I think, before we started on 'Blackwater'... So, it was insane because we got driven out to this old abandoned quarry and there was a base there and then they had to drive another five minutes down the road to where they'd built this castle for the sake of the production. It was on sort of a small lake of this old abandoned quarry, and the scale of it, to start with, was just incredible, and then as the production went on, the amount of people that were there -- it was breathtaking. It was great fun getting thrown in the deep end, but it was mad. Absolutely mad.
