Sunshine Draws Local Residents Out

Warm weather had many local residents enjoying the sunshine this weekend.

Memorial Day weekend marks the start to summer and local residents couldn't be more ready.

Whether it was garden work, Little League games, golf, kick ball or finishing up projects, many took advantage of the sunny weather, spending time outdoors.

Originally called Declaration Day, Memorial Day is given to remembering those who have died through their service to the nation, typically war. The holiday observance was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War.

The tradition of remembering loved ones on Memorial Day still holds true today, coupled with celebrating the living with family gatherings over picnics and other outdoor socializing.

"We're watching my son play ball today. It's a great time to just sit back and relax," said Monica Edick. "The weather is cooperating and lots of people seem to be enjoying themselves."

Having the extra day off Monday many may head to the malls for sales. For a group of artists called "High Impact Cru," or HICru, a six-member muralist team, finishing up a mural was how they wanted to spend their Saturday.

The artists have been transforming the wall at Lion Plaza, 971 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, from plain to dazzling. Various icons from "Chronicles of Narnia" movies, based on the books by C.S. Lewis are colorfully painted in several sections.

"We've been making art for fifteen years," said Ryan Christenson, the group lead. "We wanted to finish the project in time to be seen when the movies start. It's a great wall to paint, and we were psyched when Alina Farago, the building owner said yes to the request."

Farago paid for the materials but the muralists each donated their time to do the work.
