(Updated) Police: Arrest Made in Charles Street Burglaries, Case Still 'Active'

The charges are mounting for a Plantsville man that police said has been actively involved in a string of residential burglaries across the state stretching from Southington to Simsbury, including the theft of a loaded 9-mm handgun from a Charles Street home on April 1.

Southington police served a warrant on David Kirychuk, 27, in connection with the Charles Street burglary, as well as incidents that occurred on March 31 and April 1 in the area of Lynn Avenue and Zwicks Farm Road, Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz confirmed Wednesday.

Kirychuk is facing charges including three counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, theft of a firearm, third-degree criminal mischief, criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary, criminal possession of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment, according to court records.

He is due back in Bristol Superior Court on May 7.

Police said evidence and information provided by residents allowed detectives to tie Kirychuk, of 19 Whitlock Ave., to the incidents.

“The case remains under active investigation and it is unknown whether additional charges will be filed or additional arrests made,” Dobratz said Wednesday.

Police were called to a home on Charles Street home around 6 p.m. on April 1 to reports of a residential burglary that had taken place. Southington Police said according to owners of the home, a loaded 9-mm Smith & Wesson handgun was taken off the nightstand from within the master bedroom.

Kirychuk had allegedly gained access to the homes through rear windows, cutting screens in order to enter the house undetected. He is believed to have been involved in at least three daytime burglaries and one failed burglary that ended when residents were in the house.

According to a police report, Kirychuk made off with a wide array of items from the burglaries including a digital camera, cash, jewelry and military medals.

The 27-year-old is also facing charges for similar incidents including burglaries in Avon and Simsbury, according to a report from Avon Patch. He is also being investigated for his role in other burglaries in surrounding towns throughout the area.

Avon police told Patch editors that Kirychuck walked into a garage on Climax Road in Avon during an April incident and appeared to take something before fleeing the area in a navy blue truck. He was stopped a short time later and matched the description given by several witnesses.

No one was home at the time of the Avon incident, according to Avon Police Lt. Kelly Walsh. Kirychuk is facing charges of third-degree burglary in Avon and was also booked in Simsbury on similar charges, according to court records.

It was unknown if anything was taken from the Avon home, but police discovered jewelry in his car that matched the description of items stolen from a Southington home.

Court records indicate that Kirychuk, who has a long history of smaller incidents in the area including charges of possession of narcotics from an April 2 arrest in Southington, remains in state custody in lieu of bonds.
