Mix Master Brings New Vibe - And Eats - to Downtown

Hot 93.7's Kevin Grant says business has been good at his newly opened K. Gees restaurant on Center Street.

He's been a DJ for years at Hot 93.7 FM, and now he's his mixing his knowledge of nightlife and love of good food at K. Gee's Gourmet Burgers and Beers on Center Street.

Kevin Grant, better known as "DJ KG" to the music crowd, said his lengthy search for the perfect spot for a bar and grill finally ended when he found his 25 Center St. location. Nestled between other restaurants and local hot spots, his plan finally came to fruition this past spring.

"I was looking for a smaller bar and grill and I just really liked the atmosphere on this street," Grant said. "So far business has been good. It's exciting."

K. Gee's is Grant's first entrepreneurial venture. The Watertown man knew he always wanted to open his own place some day, but wasn't sure what kind of food to offer until his girlfriend and cook Maria Colon experimented with dinner one evening.

"One night she said, I'm going to make a mushroom burger, taco burger and a breaded hamburger she calls 'little Italy,' and our kids went bananas for them, they were so good," Grant said. Since there are no other gourmet burger places in town, we decided that would be our specialty."

The family recipes were enough to impress first-time diners Scott and Patricia Rashaw, enjoying burgers Thursday night.

"We're from Southington, and we heard this place opened and we've been meaning to stop in for a while now," the Rashaw said. "The burgers were excellent, it's very good here."

All the burgers such as the "stuffed gobbler," a half pound of ground turkey stuffed with white cheddar cheese and topped with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy - are never frozen and handmade to order. Other menu options include upscale salads, wings and sandwiches like pulled-pork.

Admitting he doesn't cook the food himself, Grant can be seen spinning records instead of flipping burgers at his place during the evenings.

"I know bars because I've deejayed in them for so long, so that's what I'm focusing my efforts on. My motto is, 'I don't make the food, I eat it,'" Grant said.

Hoping to carve his own niche within Center Street's burgeoning nightlife, K. Gee's offers karaoke Tuesday nights, all-request Wednesdays, he deejays top 40 songs on Thursdays and Fridays, and bands play on Saturdays.

Drink and food specials are offered during happy hour within the bar, which has a 65-inch TV and six other 42-inch screens playing various sporting events.
