... Help Other People At All Times... - The Boy Scout Oath

The Boy Scouts of Troop 17 in Southington are on a traditional annual mission of theirs.  No surprise. A Food Drive.

Wherever we travel, we find the Boy Scouts of America doing their magic to help others.  They are out there in our community, regularly performing their renowned good deeds for God, family and country and especially, those who happen on challenging times and are living on the edge, economically speaking. Now, that’s just a part of what the Boy Scouts do.

Remember, helping others is part of the Oath Boy Scouts pledge, again and again at their meetings.

The Southington Boy Scout annual food drive begins this Saturday, November 2nd. Boy Scouts will be dropping off Food Drive Bags to residents around town.  They are asking citizens to simply donate some non-perishable food items to help feed the hungry by placing them in the Food Drive Bag. A week later, on Saturday, November 9th, the Boy Scouts will return to pick up the Food Drive Bags containing your donated food items.

That’s really all you need to do: accept the Food Drive Bag this Saturday, fill it with your donated food items and have it ready for pick up by a smiling Boy Scout on Saturday, Nov. 9th.

That day the Boy Scouts will also deliver the collected Food Drive bags to a staging area at the First Baptist Church, located at the corner of Meriden Avenue and Belleview, across from Lewis Farms.

There the donated food will be sorted, boxed and donated to Bread For Life for their soup kitchen and storage pantry to help our local friends and neighbors in need.

Jim Diggins, one of the leaders of Troop 17 said, “We are by far the biggest food drive of the year for Bread For Life and we are honored to help them in their service to others!  We hope you can help us this Saturday morning.”

Hunger is a huge problem around the world and in this country. Right here in Southington, Bread for Life makes it its mission to feed the hungry…”that no one may go hungry”.

Bread for Life runs a soup kitchen at the Masonic Lodge at the Town Green. Weekdays at noon those in need of a hot and nutritious meal go to Bread for Life where they have a warm and welcoming crew of volunteers who also make sure that clients leave after lunch with a packaged meal for later. Bread for Life does much more, including, for example, bringing hot meals to those living in subsidized senior housing as well as shut-ins in Southington.

Let’s help the Boy Scouts of Southington in their pledge to “help others at all times”.
