Southington Food Pantry Alerts Community to Critical Shortage of Food for the Local Hungry

Economic challenges and uncertainty over a recovery contribute heavily to growing conditions of hunger. Southington Food Pantry calls on community to help with specifically listed food donations.

Hunger continues to grow in this prolonged, challenging economy.

People are hungry. Yes, they are without food, right here in Southington.

Increasing numbers of families can’t make ends meet. They come to the Southington Food Pantry hoping for help.  But with the increasing need, the supply of food on the pantry shelves is outpaced and therefore inadequate.

Southington’s Food Pantry’s supply of food primarily comes from private and group donations of money and food. Money donations are used
to purchases food for the local pantry from Food Share, a non-profit
organization that provides food for the hungry at extremely low prices.

But even at Food Share, certain foods run out r are in very short supply in times like these.

The Southington Food antry must then depend on the generosity of the community bringing in donations of food, especially foods that are chronically in very short supply.

Southington Community Services and Bread for Life work together in feeding local hunger. Cooperatively and collaboratively, they operate effectively in keeping the supply chain in balance most of the time.

Right now, however, with the shortage of food growing exponentially they have put out an alert to the Southington Community appealing for specific food donations to help ease the situation.

The alert contains a list of the critically needed items in chronic short supply which include: Peanut Butter, Jelly, Cereals, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Macaroni & Cheese,Tuna Fish, Beef Stew, Soups, Juice and Canned Meats.

The Food Pantry deals only in non-perishable packaged or canned foods, i.e., no fresh produce, meats or dairy items can be stored.

Please drop off any food donations, large or small , at Southington Community Services located at 91 Norton Street in Plantsville.

Donors may phone (860) 628-3761 or (860) 919-3109 to request pick up of food donations or email mellonj@southington.org or fazzolarim@southington.org.

It’s hard to imagine anything more challenging for a human being than hunger, going without food.
