STEPS Week Goal: Positive Family Communication

STEPS Week promotes Positve Family Communication - Get into it and raise the bar of greater hope and possibiities for our children as the leaders of the future.

Ideas like promoting family values directing our young lives to higher moral ground, respect for parents, other people's property and building their sense of self-worth and other similar principals are what society needs so much. We see this in 7.

The presence of STEPS in our community for the past several years has moved positive living principles into positive action. That's what STEPS is about, moving our community forward, right here in Southington, to a point of focusing the action of our entire town on promoting the success of our younger generations of children who are in their elementary school years and in their teen years.

STEPS is not just one more nice program! We say that because it is a long term vision that takes steps at a time, gradually changing our culture through many new and, yes, some familiar traditions and puts them to work in our daily lives.

STEPS works by involving the proactive participation of virtually every sector of our community, kids, their parents, their educators, police and fire departments, health care professionals and agencies, religious communities, business, commerce and the general population. This is paramount in importance because it's a vision that takes a village to make it real.

The ideas of a diverse group of members of the community started it all started about six years ago in the aftermath of a series of teen suicides in Southington.

The initial and continuing goals including the prevention of the abuse of harmful drugs and substance, the use of alcohol, tobacco, the societal phenomenon of bullying and other risky behavior in children.

Each year, there is a “STEPS Week” in September that helps to launch everyone concerned back into the STEPS way after the summer break.

STEPS Week this year has been set around the theme of building the Asset in children of Positive Family Communication through simple everyday conscious efforts for parents and children to communicate with each other.

You can read more about the suggested ideas of STEPS for each day of the 7-Day Challenge of Monday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 23, by clicking the link provided.

While this week is particularly a week for parents and their children throughout Southington, everyone can be a part of it by being aware, thereby being a witness to what is being promoted this week and perhaps as a reminder for some parents who may have missed the ads, announcements and stories about STEPS Week in the media.

Let's male this week a winning success for our parents and children.
