Local Veteran Bound for D.C. to Help Homeless Vets at Christmas

John DeMello, Sr. is a retired police officer who spends a spends a lot of his time in our community where he and his wife Chong reside, helping veterans and others in many ways.

We learned today that, in an act of mercy for the homeless veterans, during this cold winter season, DeMello is spreading the word that he is collecting donations of clothing, blankets, gloves, scarfs, winter hats and other items, clean used or new items to distribute among the veterans on the streets of Washington, D.C.   Contact John at 860-621-3586 or at his cell phone, 860-302-4666.

Next Saturday, December 21, 2013, the DeMello's are heading down to D.C. in their pickup truck, hoping that with the generous help of the people of Southington, they will be able to fill the truck with items to help keep some of our homeless veterans warmer this winter.

John and Chong are visiting their son, John, Jr., an Air Force Captain who is stationed at the Pentagon. He and his wife, Nikki, are leaving Thailand on Christmas Day.  DeMello, Sr. said: "In past visits to Washington it was hard to miss seeing the many homeless veterans living on the streets of D.C. with practically nothing but the scant, thread-worn clothing on their backs."

Contact John at 860-621-3586 or at his cell phone, 860-302-4666.

Who can help?  Individuals or groups, such as churches, community service and civic or fraternal organizations and clubs, etc. DeMello is coordinating his efforts with and in behalf of American Legion Kiltonic Post # 72, as an act of kindness.

Got any coats, blankets, mittens, hoodies, warm jackets, scarves, warm socks, footwear you no longer really need?

Are some of your things oversized or undersized?  Don't let them sit in the closet or the attic.  Help someone who served his or her country in time of need who now needs a helping hand.

"There but for the Grace of God go I"

To donate clothing you may contact DeMello at 860-621-3586 or at his cell phone, 860-302-4666.
