Quilts of Valor to Comfort the Healing Wounds of Veterans of War

Here's something especially significant this week as we approach Memorial Day and at a time when so many of our veterans need healing in many different ways from the wounds of war. They have served our country bravely. Let's do likewise with a little time to help sew Quilts of Valor to help soothe and ease their attempt to return to civilian life. Here's how simple it is to offer your help.On Saturday, May 31st, from 9 am to 3 pm a group of volunteers will gather at the American Legion Kiltonic Post #72 Hall at 64 Main Street.

The American Legion has graciously offered their hall for a project whose purpose it is is to sew quilts, Quilts of Valor, for our service personnel who need our support, not only physical support but moral support to help them move on with their lives.

The finished Quilts will be presented to veterans by Quilts of Valor National to cover those touched by war in diverse ways.

“We need volunteers”, said Jane Dougherty, QOV project coordinator. “Bring your own sewing supplies and sewing machine, if you have one. Or, you can help by cutting, ironing, etc?’  Donations of red, white, cream, blue and Patriotic fabric will be gladly accepted. Come for the day. Or stop by to help for a while. Refreshments, pizza will be here for all who come to help.”

American Legion Past Commander, John E. DeMello, Sr., recalled that he had assisted Dolores Longo and her family in contacting Quilts of Valor Foundation, www.tqof.org, who arranged a moving ceremony at the family residence in December 2013. Each of three Longo family wartime veterans, Father, Peter L. Longo, (Korea), son, Peter W. Longo, (Vietnam), grandson, John Potter, (Afghanistan), and a friend and fourth veteran, Charles Bass, (Korea), received a personal Quilt.  This year, the Legion has offered its hall to Q.O.V. for the sewing of quilts on May 31st.  To sign up, contact Jane.dougherty@QOVF.org or call 203-315- 0232.
