Road Courtesy if for Everyone, Not Just the Other Guy!

STOP a moment and think. Your safety is first.

Road courtesy is not just a matter of being considerate.  It is a matter of safety.. of life and death!  Yes, auto accidents are still the number one cause of fatalities in the U.S.A.

We read about DUI's everyday now.  Refer to today's post on Patch  about a man driving drunk and recklessly, changing lanes, hitting a utility pole on Meriden Avenue, with two young children in the rear seat who were injured, not minor injuries, etiher.

Speeders, lane changers, running traffic lights, not stopping at STOP signs risking life and limb of others and themselves.

Why? Oh, yes, they're late for an appointment, late for work, in a hurry to get home, always too much in a hurry to worry about an accident. It's all reckless driving and there is no good excuse for it.

RED light means STOP.  STOP signs mean STOP, not ooze through.

Ah yes, then there are pedestrians. Last night while driving down Main Street between the Library and Derynoski School, I stopped in the middle of the block to allow pedestrians to cross the street, no doubt going to a PTO event.

Some had children in tow, almost all of them crossing with safety first in mind. A couple of them were attentive enough to notice my car standing and waiting. They took a second to wave a hand of thanks. That was a nice gesture that kind of said to me, "we know you are being cautious'.

But, then there was one lady crossing the street, (maybe she's reading this blog post now), who walked straight across the street with a cell phone glued to her ear talking very animatedly, paying no attention whatsoever to others crossing or anything that was going on around her. She might have been taking a walk in the park or floating on a cloud! But wait, maybe Mrs. Cell Phone's call was so urgent that she could not wait to get across the street to a safe place to have her conversation.  Evidently, whatever she was talking about was important enough for her to risk her life and someone else's life. Right?

When are we going to learn? Wake up world.

Good grief!
