United Way of Southington Leads Home Front Project in major Home Improvement.

We got there about 10:45 am.  About three dozen volunteers were busy moving around, gathering tools, pickup up material, hammering, sawing, drilling and doing a plumbing job installing a new bathroom and hot water heater in a home owned by a young couple named Missy and Chris. Their kids were around somewhere, actually helping in the project, too.

It was a beautiful day and what an amzing sight it was!
The couple have been through some tempestuous times on the past two years or so and have gradually gotten on their feet with jobs and an old house in serious disrepair on a rented lot, according to sources who were conducting the all volunteer corps of work being done. They are so grateful to these folks, so many that don't know them.  "But that's the Lord's work.  They are here for him", Chris said.  There must have been a dozen just painting the exterior with long, telescoped rollers.  Kids tried their hand at painting but could only reach up so high.

What a wonderful demonstration of volunteerism, caring for neighbors, strangers to many of them, but all people of heart and faith, especially in one another.

Missy said: "I am overwhelmed. I knew people were coming to help. But I had no clue as to how many would actually come. And they are so prepared and know what they are doing.  We are so blessed!"

One volunteer who preferred not to be identified said that he was there for several reasons: He said his parents had been in the same position of needing help at a time many years ago; he has been doing this type of volunteering for a while and when he saw the opportunity to help, he jumped in. Finally he said, "It's just the right thing to do."

Missy and a friend prepared a lot of food which was put out on tables for the volunteers.  Others bought donuts, pizza, coffee.  Yours truly had just left the STEPS Youth Relay for Life Team who were selling baked goods for the beneift of Relay for Life.  Couldn't buying some cookie, muffins and cupcakes and brought them over and added them to the food offerings for the volunteers of Home Front.

I think the volunteers were also enjoying what they were doing in the company of a bunch of people of good will. I know I had fun taking the photos, watching the work, talking to folks and then writing this story for my other friends and readers in Southington and everywhere.

What can we do this next week to help someone who really needs it and would appreciate it?  Could be someone like you or me.

Kaye Davis, Executive Director of United Way of Southington, who organized this event with the Home Front people was amazed herself.  Davis said: "We've never actually undertaken a project like this.  Doing this has taught us a few things about getting organized to do it even better next year."
