United Way Volunteers Read to Elementary School Children

Reading is so important. Reading to children adds another dimension to the experience books. There's a very special connection between the reader and a group of children.

June 13th provided such an experience to students, (and teachers), at seven of Southington’s eight elementary schools.

The United Way of Southington's Day of Action was truly special for the forty-five volunteers who visited the schools to read books to the children.

“This year was the fourth consecutive year that the United Way of Southington has planned, organized and recruited volunteers for the Annual Day of Action”, said Executive Director, Kaye Davis who was also one of the readers, as shown in one of the photos posted here as she read to a second grade class at the Kelley School.

"Volunteers always enjoy the experience and are amazed at the eager interaction of these elementary school children with an outside visitor.", Davis said.

Teachers appreciate the day because children love to have stories read to them.  Having people of the community coming to visit and spend time with these kids sparks their educational journey as they learn to meet and make new connections, hear new voices., see new faces and gain new perspectives on any subject.  It's also a welcome break from their normal daily studies.

Davis sent this email to all volunteers who read to the children: "Thank you. It was so much fun, and reminds up of what’s important in life…. Children!

"I'll do it again. Connecting with the kids is one way to show mentoring--even though I was clownin' around. I peeked in and saw others reading. The kids were so attentive and giggling ...HappyY! Thanks for the opportunity!" - Diana Sheard, (Valentine the Clown).

Let's read to kids this summer and also be sure they do some reading themselves.
