[Updated: 4:15 p.m.] 3,870 Without Power as Storm Subsides

Considerable damage was reported in some areas including at a home along Stuart Drive where a tree fell into the house, but police said no one was injured.

Hurricane Irene has left the area, but not before causing some considerable damage including leaving over 3,800 local residents without power.

Heavy overnight rains have caused several fallen tree branches, downed wires and flooding on town roads but most are open, although officials are asking residents to still use caution while traveling as clean-up efforts begin.

Connecticut Light and Power is reporting that as of 4:15 p.m. 630,268 customers statewide are without power, including 3,870 in Southington. The number of outages represent 19 percent of the customers in town, according to CL&P.

No timetable has been given yet as to when power could be restored.

A tree fell into a home along Stuart Drive just after 11 a.m., according to police, and caused significant damage to the house. Fire and local building inspectors have responded but no injuries were reported.

Police confirmed a Record-Journal report that that occupants were able to safely move to a neighbors home.

Trees or poles were also knocked down in several areas of town, police said, including along Meriden-Waterbury Road, Lynwood Drive, West Main Street, Orchard Lane, East Street, West Queen Street, Curtiss Street,Woodruff Street, Wheeler Village, Juniper Lane, Marion Avenue, Hilside Avenue and Eliot Drive.

Downed wires were reported along Marion Avenue, Lynwood Drive, Meriden Waterbury Road, South End Road, Mulberry Street, East Street, South Main Street, Carey Street, Panthorn Park, Lanning Street, Dale Drive, Oakland Road, Glenn Drive, Summer Street, Plum Orchard and Holly Hill.

Most roads remain closed as clean-up efforts have begun and will be reopened as soon as possible.

Residents are asked to call (do not facebook post) (860) 621-0101 if they locate any other hazards not on this list.

The town opened a shelter at the , Sunday morning to help those who were directly affected by the storm or did not have a safe place to go. Only a few residents used the shelter, which has since closed.

Police are also using Facebook to keep residents informed of the latest public announcements in Southington.

Across the eastern seaboard, Hurricane Irene caused significant damage, with millions without power, including more than 100,000 in the New York City area and 800,000 in Maryland, according to the New York Times.

In Connecticut, heavy winds forced West Haven emergency personnel to restrict response to calls concerning life-threatening conditions early Sunday. Winds there were measured at 67 mph according to the National Weather Service.
