Clear Skies, Early Spring and Kindergarten Information Session

What's what in Southington today, Feb. 3, 2011.

So here’s the scoop for today, Feb. 3, 2011.

Good News on the Weather Front… –

For the first time in a while, Southington Patch is happy to report that if we said it would snow today, we’d be lying.

The National Weather Service is forecasting clear skies over the next 24-hours, with a high near 27 degrees daytime. Temperatures will cool down at night, remaining clear with a low around 5 degrees.

…And An Early Spring! –

While the weather was bringing tough conditions for motorists, there was some good news across the Northeast as the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil and Connecticut’s own groundhog, Chuckles, both did not see their shadows. Instead the day provided some hope for an early spring, as the groundhogs predicted.

The news comes at a great time for many area residents who believe in the 125-year-old tradition, especially given the record-setting snowfall this winter.

Kindergarten Information Session –

Southington schools are scheduled to host a Kindergarten Information Session tonight at the Derynoski School starting at 6:30 p.m. The session is designed to provide parents with the information they need to properly register and prepare their children for kindergarten.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and ask any questions they may have.

YMCA Annual Dinner Rescheduled–

The Southington-Cheshire YMCA will host its annual YMCA Dinner and Meeting at the Aqua Turf Friday night after weather forced administrators to postpone Wednesday’s event.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. with dinner scheduled for 6:15 p.m., about 300 people from across all segments of the community are expected to attend.

The event serves as a fundraiser kick-off for the YMCA and also allows the center to honor local residents for going above and beyond. This year’s honorees include Dr. Joseph V. Erardi Jr., Central Connecticut Senior Health Services and Mary DeCroce.
