Planning Commission Denies Bid for Day Care Facility  –

The Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday night voted 6-1 to deny an application that would have allowed a day care facility to open at 2003 West St., citing that the plan is not a conforming use of the commercial property, which abuts Ridgeview Estates, an over-55 community.

The commission’s decision came after more than a month of public hearings in which residents expressed concerns regarding the proposal, including traffic concerns caused by a large center and the dangers of having a 181-child daycare within a high traffic area.

“When this first came up as a mixed use site in October 2003, I remember the attorney saying the site wouldn’t be used for something like a day care,” said Commissioner Zaya G. Oshana. “We’ve heard from neighbors and a variety of people and a daycare center in a 55 and older community just does not fit well together.”
