Southington Schools Will Be Closed Monday

Many other town businesses and organizations will be closed Sunday as Hurricane Irene passes through.

With Hurricane Irene approaching faster than originally anticipated, many town establishments have made the decision to close during the impending storms.

What's Closed?

  • All non-essential town departments have closed and will remain so through at least Sunday.
  • All religious institutions in town have canceled Sunday services and will remain closed at the end of the day Saturday through the end of the storm.
  • Southington schools will be closed Monday. Schools are expected to resume with the first day of classes on Tuesday, Aug. 30, instead.
  • Emergency personnel will be removed from roads in winds exceeding 50 mph, except in extreme, dire emergencies, Town Manager Garry Brumback said.

What's Open?

Gov. Dannel Malloy is considering a travel ban during the duration of the heaviest weather, which would begin after dark Saturday. All non-essential emergency departments would be banned from roads and local stores will be asked to consider closing.

  • The town's emergency shelters will be open, but secured, during the storm to help those in need of a place to go during the extreme weather.

The shelters have been established at the following locations:

  • , 388 Pleasant St., primary location.
  • , 255 Main St., secondary location.

Road Closures and Parking Bans

The Southington Police Department has announced road closures at flood locations along Curtiss Street and Mill Street. In addition, there is a townwide parking ban in effect from 2 a.m. Sunday morning until further notice.
