Spring is officially upon us, and with it comes the question – where can you go for a reasonable price during the summer months?

Well Southington Patch has your answer. In a special “Five Things” today, we will highlight unique activities available at five of Southington’s recreational parks. For some, this may provide insight and for others it may simply be a reminder – but either way we hope it provides useful information.

Fishing and Kayaking the Day Away at Crescent Lake –

Located off of Shuttle Meadow Road in the back woods of north-east Southington, is a hidden gem with trails, picnic areas and more.

What sets the park apart, however, are the opportunities to fish among a freshly stocked lake or kayak during summer months with cheap rentals available through the town. The park itself is also free for town residents year round.

Looking for Entertainment? Try the Town Green on Wednesdays –

The provides a nice escape for residents who just want a moment away from the bustle of a busy day, but did you know it’s also a place for fine entertainment each summer?

From June through August, the green transforms into a concert location with a stage placed on the opposite side of Apple Alley, the road that runs parallel to Main Street in downtown Southington. Apple Alley is closed and the green comes alive for the series “Music on the Green.”

Recreation Park: A Playground by a Lake and Movie Nights –

Along Maxwell Noble Drive, just off South End Road, there is a place where parents can not only take their young ones for some playground fun, but can do so in the comfort of a fenced in area that sits right next to a beautiful pond. Charming indeed. Welcome to .

A lot of people also haven’t enjoyed one of the park’s newest features – a fully functional Drive-In Theatre located off the backside of the park with a separate entrance on Meriden-Waterbury Road. Tune in to Patch this summer for show times and further details.

Swim Those Warm Days Away at Memorial Park –

has one of the town’s highest number of swimmers each summer, with local residents able to enter the park along Woodruff Street and gain access at little or no cost. What better way to enjoy your summer days?

Take a Hike at Panthorn Park –

It’s a hot summer day, not too muggy but not exactly what one would consider “prime conditions” to be exercising underneath the sun. Why not take to the shaded wooded paths at ?

The Park features miles of hiking trails, a full Frisbee golf course and more for local residents and like all other parks in town, this comes free of charge.
