FOI Workshop, Channel Black Out and Computer Classes

What's what in Southington today, Feb. 7, 2011.

So here’s the scoop for today, Feb. 7, 2011.

Mild Temperatures, Snow Showers –

The mild temperatures seen on Sunday will continue again today with a high near 40 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

As temperatures drop at night, however, snow showers will roll into the area and bring a layer of snow. About 1 to 3 inches is expected, although the timing may allow most of the accumulation to end by sunrise.

Board of Water Commissioner FOI Workshop –

Members of the Board of Water Commissioners will meet tonight for a Freedom of Information Workshop in the Council Chambers at Southington Town Hall.

The workshop was part of an agreement reached by the board following a November complaint filed by local resident Art Cyr, who was concerned over the inability of citizens to see minutes and more specifically an old requirement that citizens must “sign in” when attending meetings.

The visitors log is designed to provide an accurate record of those who speak during the public participation portion but Cyr said it was causing concern among attendees who didn’t want to make their name and address public just by attending.

“It makes people nervous and it intimidates some who just want to follow what’s going on in town,” Cyr said. “Other boards used to do the same thing (having people sign in) but stopped that procedure years ago.”

The workshop will be open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Channel 15 Black Out –

A roof collapse at the Cox Communications Public Access office late last week has forced the cable provider to temporary suspend programming for Channel 15.

The office, located at 1701 Highland Ave. in Cheshire, suffered structural damage making entry unsafe. Cox is working to fix the problem but has not announced when service may be restored.

The Cox Communications Service Center at 687 East Main St. in Meriden remains open.

Computer Registration at the Calendar House –

The Computer Learning Center will hold registration today for the upcoming computer courses, which begin on March 8.

Courses include Computer Basics for Beginners, Introduction to Computers, Exploring the Internet, Files and Folders Management, Basic Digital Photography and the Many Faces of Google.
