It's A Day In The Park For Santa

Holiday excitement sparks fun for youngsters across town Sunday.

If this time of year is particularly energizing for adults, imagine what it must feel like for kids.

On Sunday afternoon, a very special visitor from the North Pole came to town. Curious children in kindergarten through third-grade were all too eager to greet Santa to tell him what they wished for.

A park building on Maxwell Noble Drive in Recreation Park served as 'Santa's Workshop.' The brightly painted walls displayed toys and favorite holiday decorations.

"This is a big deal for kids," said David Lapreay, Director of Recreation for Southington Parks and Recreation. "Even though Christmas is still a ways off, seeing Santa is what marks the season for youngsters."

The warm temperature made for a big turnout. In addition to meeting Santa, families lined up to take a twenty-minute horse-drawn carriage ride. The two horses, one black and the other a light tan, were from Wood Acres Farm in Terryville.

Holiday tunes put the feel of season in the air while Valentine The Clown designed balloon shaped animals for the kids.

Hot chocolate and baked treats were provided by the American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary Junior Girls Unit 72.

"Proceeds from refreshments always goes right back towards children," said Barbara Pasha, President of American Legion Post 72 Auxiliary. "We care about many needy causes like St. Jude Hospital, Operation Military Kids, social services, etc. It's events like these that keep the fun in charity."

Spending time is what everyone enjoys most during the holidays, and Santa's visit was a great way to do just that.
