Southington Pistol Permit Rate Ranks Fifth in Hartford County

The town ranks 82nd in Connecticut, but is fifth in Hartford County and second in the county in total permits issued, according to a database published by The New Haven Register.

Smaller Connecticut towns have shown a higher rate when it comes to residents owning pistol permits, but Southington has one of the highest totals in Hartford County.

A database of pistol permits issued by town shows Southington ranks fifth in Hartford County with a 6.4 percent rate — tied with Plainville — and is second overall in the county in total permits issued with 2,751, according to a new map database published by The New Haven Register.


While Southington's rate may seem high in comparison to the rest of the county, however, the town ranks 82nd and lies in the middle of total permit rate when compared to Connecticut's 169 municipalities.

Across the state, smaller towns showed a higher percentage of gun ownership and pistol permit rates.

Canaan accounted for the highest rate in Connecticut at about 13.5 percent of the population. The top five communities with the highest percentage of the population having pistol permits were Canaan, Union, Harwinton, Hartland and Hampton.

The town-by-town breakdown in Hartford County is as follows:

Avon – 3.7 percent
Berlin – 7.3 percent
Bloomfield – 4 percent
Bristol – 6 percent
Burlington – 8 percent
Canton – 5.8 percent
East Granby – 5.8 percent
East Hartford – 4.1 percent
East Windsor – 6.6 percent
Enfield – 5.2 percent
Farmington – 4.8 percent
Glastonbury – 4.4 percent
Granby – 6 percent
Hartford – 1.5 percent
Hartland – 11.4 percent
Manchester – 4.4 percent
Marlborough – 7.4 percent
New Britain – 3.1 percent
Newington – 5.8 percent
Plainville – 6.4 percent
Rocky Hill – 4.9 percent
Simsbury – 3.9 percent
South Windsor – 5 percent
Southington – 6.4 percent
Suffield – 5.5 percent
West Hartford – 2.6 percent
Wethersfield – 5 percent
Windsor - 4.7 percent
Windsor Locks - 5.8 percent
