Snow Removal Means More Town Spending –

As the Highway Department continues to battle unusual weather patterns and record accumulation this winter, the costs continue to rise.

The Board of Finance approved a second appropriation to the Highway Department Wednesday evening, increasing the budget an additional $180,000. The appropriation is addition to a $150,000 funding approved in January after the town had already spent its $160,000 budget for snow removal.

“There is some good news here, that we could receive federal money for the Blizzard in December and a second storm in January,” said Steve Wlodkowski, Southington’s highway superintendent. “The amount isn’t known, but we should be able to recoup some money through the FEMA grant.”
