This week, we are looking at the Board of Finance candidates:

Name: Edward Rosenblatt
Age:
61
Party, Board Seeking: Democratic Candidate for Board of Finance
Family information: I raised my family in Southington over the last 33 years.
Occupation, if applicable: Attorney
Political Experience: Member, Southington Democratic Town Committee since 1987.
Other Experience: Real estate and finance attorney since 1981, Southington Assistant Town Attorney, 1999 – 2003, Member, Southington Clergy Association.

Why did you run for office?
My interest in serving on the Board of Finance has arisen because I believe that Southington would benefit greatly from better leadership than it has had in the last several years. Our focus has been far too reactive and insufficiently forward-looking. Too many decisions have been made for easy political expediency rather than more difficult foresight.

If elected, what would be your primary areas of focus?
My main focus will be the service of the needs of all of Southington’s people without permitting interference by politics. This will include carefully guarding our rainy day fund, providing an excellent public education for our students, and helping to increase our tax base by attracting desirable businesses to come to and remain in Southington.

What do you feel is the biggest issue facing Southington today?
The biggest challenge facing Southington’s Board of Finance is to maintain a delicate balance between the complex financial needs of the Town and its school system in an uncertain economy on the one hand, and the limited resources of many of its taxpayers on the other. Meeting this challenge will require patience, compassion, creativity and foresight.

What skills do you have that you could bring to the community?

I will bring my many years of experience as a real estate and finance attorney, including my service as Assistant Town Attorney in Southington, my experience as a long time town resident, and, above all, my respect for Southington’s people and their intelligence.
