This week, we are looking at the Southington Planning and Zoning candidates.

Name: Michael Del Santo
Age: 41
Party, Board Seeking: Republican, Planning and Zoning Commission
Family information: Married, 2 children ages 6 and 5
Occupation, if applicable: State of Ct Judicial Branch
Political Experience: Running for my 4th term on PZC. I have served as Chairperson the past 4 years.

Why did you run for office?
I am a lifelong resident of Southington and I decided in 2001 that instead of complaining about how my town was run, I would prefer to help change the way it was run. I believe my last 12 years of service I have made a difference. I have been involved in fairly high profile applications as a commissioner and have initiated numerous improvements to our regulations as Chairperson.

If elected, what would be your primary areas of focus?
My primary focus is to continue to ensure that Southington remains business friendly and do I all can to be sure there is open communication between the Town Staff and other elected and appointed boards. Another focus will be to continue to work on the redevelopment of the West Street Corridor. We have achieved tremendous accomplishments thus far, but we still have a long way to go.

What do you feel is the biggest issue facing Southington today?
I think keeping the mill rate low will continue to be Southington’s primary focus. I fell that I have had a hand in making sure PZC is doing its part to foster economic development.

What skills do you have that you could bring to the community?
I have been elected 3 times. My last 4 years I believe I have served as Chairperson honorably with dedication and integrity. I have missed 6 meetings since 2001 (none as Chairperson), so I feel I have given every application my complete attention.
