When I was younger I remember my Mom constantly re-arranging the furniture in our living room. In fact, she moved things around every season.
Back then, I never really understood why, but now I realize how each arrangement was designed to take advantage of a seasonal focal point. In the winters the seating would focus on the warm, cozy fireplace and in the warmer months, the big bay window and its lovely garden view beyond were on display. My Mom was the original redesigner.
Redesign, the art of arranging furnishings and accessories to accentuate a home’s architecture, highlight focal points, and encourage conversation is breathing new life into stale rooms. Most often, no new items are purchased but instead, the home is "shopped" for furnishings, rugs, artwork and accessories that will compliment the rooms overall look.
Our goal in redesigning is not to only make the room pretty but to make sure we reflect the people who live there. After all it is your home and you want it to be unique to you and your family.
Notice the "before" picture above. The space feels disorganized and cluttered as all the furnishings line the walls making for difficult conversation. There is no clear focal point and the room’s high ceilings make the space feel cavernous.
This redesigns "after" reveals a cozy, inviting conversation area in which the focal points of the space (the television and wall of windows) are clear. By placing the tallest piece of furniture under the peak of the ceiling, the architecture is showcased and the ceilings height is no longer overwhelming. Proper lighting surrounds the perimeter and artwork and accessories are carefully chosen to compliment.
Rooms that always seems dark or that everyone walks by because they are uninviting can become welcoming and useful once more. Rooms, such as our example above, with furniture lining the walls or seating that is placed too far apart making for impossible conversation are great candidates for redesign. It's not so much the furnishings you own, but how you place them that will determine a room’s functionality.
Get the look you dream about in your home affordably, effectively and in just one afternoon. Rediscover your home all over again and entertain with confidence with the magic of redesign.
