September is Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month. This article is to remind our community to support Southington Bread for Life.

“Bread For Life Southington exists …So that no one may go hungry!”

In many ways, America is the land of plenty, but for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. Millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals. There is a growing sense among governments and global institutions that eradicating hunger is a fundamental challenge for the 21st century.

Poverty and homelessness exist right here in our community. Yes, there are those among us, right here in Southington, who face difficult choices every day between hunger, clothing, shelter, medicine and other vital necessities.

Southington residents are not lacking behind…enthusiastic and continuous support to Bread For Life indicates that every month is a Hunger Action Month in Southington.

Bread For Life Southington opened its doors on September 10, 1984. It initially operated three days a week at three different churches, serving sixteen people. By 1990, it expanded to a five-day-a-week program.  That year it served 10,548 meals.

In 2010, Bread For Life provided over 30,000 meals to our neighbors and friends in Southington who would otherwise go hungry. We provided 10,891 meals to local shut-ins, 9215 meals at our kitchen dining facility and 9,632 meals to seniors living in low-income housing through a new program of delivering hot, wholesome meals daily to seniors living in subsidized housing.

In 2011, the above figures are far exceeding.

Bread For Life collaborates with Southington Community Services in order to expand the hours of the Food Pantry in an effort to better serve the needs of our community.  Qualified Southington residents in need of supplemental groceries can visit the Community Services location at 91 Norton Street in Plantsville.

The hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. through 4:15 p.m.

Bread For Life exists with your support and generous donations of food and funds contributed by local churches and faith organizations, food stores, food service establishments, businesses, local schools, as well as professionals and volunteers in our community
.

Please consider:

Helping with few hours of your time, food donation, a monetary gift.
