Soup Night: An inspiration of Sharing and Giving…

Bread For Life's annual Community Soup Night brought the community together on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Southington High School cafeteria.

The spirit of Sharing and Giving was apparent at Bread For Life’s annual Community Soup Night on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Cafeteria. Rain did not slow down the enthusiasm - instead it made the evening perfect for a bowl of soup, and more.

The motivation and inspiration amongst all the volunteers and residents was clearly displaying the mission of Bread For Life: “that no one may go hungry.”

Everything served was generously donated from many of Southington’s very fine local establishments. As an added feature, there were a limited number of handmade ceramic bowls available for purchase. These bowls were made by students from Derynoski Elementary School and donated to Bread for Life.

There were also a large number of raffle items available – all donated by various organizations and individuals. Student volunteers took pride in serving the attendees and provided superb service on every table, also donating their tips to Bread for Life.

“Soup Night is sponsored by Bread for Life each year, but its success is largely due to the many contributions made by members of the Southington community,” stated Bill McDougall, Bread for Life Board Chairman.

In 2010, Bread for life served over 30,000 meals and provided over 20,000 meals to local shut-ins and seniors. Bread for Life formed a collaboration with the Southington Education Department to provide breakfast to all Southington school students and also formed a collaboration with Southington Community Services to expand the community food pantry hours in an effort to better serve the needs of our community.
