Patch’s Poll: Should Gay People be Afforded the Same Federal Rights in Marriage?

A federal judge in Connecticut has ruled that a portion of the government’s Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional because it denies gay couples access to certain federal benefits.

A federal judge in Hartford ruled on Tuesday that a portion of the U.S. government’s 1996 Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional because it denies certain benefits to same-sex couples.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant issued a lengthy decision saying the federal law violates the Fifth Amendment right to equal protection, because of a provision that “obligates the federal government to single out a category of marriage as excluded from federal recognition, thereby resulting in an inconsistent distribution of federal marital benefits."

The case, which was carried out in the 2nd U.S. Court of Appeals, involved six married gay couples, and a widower, who were denied federal benefits such as recogition under the Family and Medical Leave Act, Social Security death benefits, the federal tax code and others.

As the AP reported, the couples had worked for the government, and at least one of the plaintiffs was a Navy veteran.

The ruling comes just a few months after a panel of judges in the 1st U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston issued a similar ruling, according to Fox News.

What do you think? Should gay people be afforded the same federal rights in marriage as straight people with regard to benefits? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

It seems pretty simple: "All men are created equal". The courts have ruled repeatedly that "men" is defined as human beings. Therefore, if the federal government denies rights to one subset of human beings in this country, that is an illegal act under the laws of our land.

Millions of people have been misled by rabid gay activists into believing that "defending" traditional man-woman marriage, as Mr. Cathy of Chic-fil-a did (and many groups do) is discriminating or "hating." I urge you to ponder the many societal reasons, and above all for the best good of children, that traditional, natural marriage between man and woman must be defended, rather than be redefined by the demands of activists. Gay couples raising children are necessarily teaching those children, by their daily lives and examples, that the other gender is dispensable!! It is a biological fact that it takes a man and a woman to create children, which is why governments recognize "marriage." It has nothing to do with "recognizing" 'love and affection.' Society and governments have a vested interest in traditional man-woman marriage in order to have an "ordered society" in which children have known fathers who are 'financially responsible' for their progeny. Male-female relationships are NATURALLY going to result in children (in most cases) when the partners are of child-bearing age. That is simply NOT true of same-sex relationships, which is why governments view the two differently, as Supreme Court judges in NY and other states have recognized. Gay couples' children are deliberately created by frankly unnatural means and are totally optional to them. Thus, government has no like interest in encouraging same-sex relationships, which are thus "different."

Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
