Convertibles have always been a symbolic vehicle in American automotive history. From the post-World War II era onward, these drop-top sedans represented a sporty "cool" look for teenage and 20-something drivers.
But, according to a recent AOL Autos article, these once-popular vehicles are loosing steam among American auto buyers.
As noted by AOL, convertible sales fell from the usual 2-percent level of the overall auto market to roughly 1 percent. And this happened despite the fact that the automobile market is expected to be 22 percent higher at this point in 2012 compared to 2011, with sales expected to climb to over 14 million by the end of this year.
On top of that, drivers that are 35 years old or younger accounted for less than 5 percent of convertible sales last year, Smart Money reported.
