Alert Owner Foils Eden Avenue Burglary Attempt, Leads Police to Arrest Two

Police said 22-year-old Alexander Arroyo was caught trying to break into a vehicle on Eden Avenue and after fleeing, led officers to a second man who was carrying a six-inch hunting knife.

An alert resident that caught a Southington man attempting to break into vehicle on Eden Avenue and the search for the suspect eventually led to not one, but two arrests as officers subsequently came across a second man carrying a pocket knife in their search efforts.

Officers took Southington residents Alexander Arroyo, 22, and Brandon Pack, 19, into custody early Tuesday morning following a series of incidents that began when police said Arroyo attempted to break into a vehicle and was caught in the act by the owner.

“At the time of the attempted break in, the owner of the vehicle was sitting inside the vehicle with a small child,” Southington Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said. “Arroyo saw the owner sitting in the vehicle and he ran from the scene.  The owner followed Arroyo as he fled the scene and called the police.

“Officers began to check the area for Arroyo and he was observed by officers looking out of a window of a house on George Street,” he said.

The owner of the vehicle, an Eden Avenue resident, was later able to identify Arroyo. He was charged with criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary, second-degree breach of peace and interfering with an officer. Arroyo was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday.

But while police were expecting just one arrest in the incident, the search for the 22-year-old led them to a man sitting on the steps of an Academy Street building who was found in possession of a six-inch hunter’s knife.

In the pursuit of Arroyo, police came across 19-year-old Brandon Pack, who matched the description of the missing suspect. Police observed Pack as he took an item from his jacket pocket and placed in in a nearby pile of leaves.

“Officers located the item, which was found to be a six-inch hunting type knife in a leather sheath. Pack was taken into custody without incident,” Dobratz said.

Pack was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday on one count of carrying a dangerous weapon. He was released after posting bond.

Both men are due back in Bristol Superior Court in December, court officials said.
