Blood, Lost Cell Phone Spoil Attempted Burglary for Southington Man

Police said a North Summit Street man attempted to use brass knuckles to break into a vehicle, but ended up leaving items behind including his cell phone while escaping little more than spare change.

An alleged car burglar from Southington learned a hard lesson this week that crime doesn’t always pay – especially when you leave your cell phone and a blood sample at the scene.

Officers arrested a North Summit Street resident last Sunday after he allegedly attempted to use brass knuckles to break through a car window and cut his hand, then lost his cell phone in the vehicle before sprinting away with little more than some spare change.

Justin Siernacki, of 111 N. Summit St., was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with third-degree burglary and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment in Bristol Superior Court on July 22.

“Officers responded to the area of Williams Street on a report of an activated car alarm,” Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said. “The owner of the vehicle looked outside where her vehicle was parked and saw a male running in the street.”

According to a police report, officers searched the vehicle and found a considerable amount of blood and some missing change. But it was a phone call that provided the final evidence needed for police to make an arrest.

As officers were in the car, a cell phone rang and police answered it to find out it belonged to Siernacki. Officers went to his home where they found Siernacki sweating and breathing heavily with a large cut on his right hand. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Police said Siernacki admitted that despite the efforts, he escaped with little more than some spare change.
