Charges Mount for Southington Man in November Burglary

A 22-year-old Southington man is facing burglary and larceny charges after police said evidence collected during a November incident along Eden Avenue where he was caught red-handed helped tie him to other car burglaries in the area.

Southington police served a warrant on Alexander Arroyo Sunday, taking him into custody on charges of third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny for his role in a Nov. 19, 2013 incident along Eden Avenue.

Arroyo, of 43 Academy St. in Southington, remains in custody and was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on the charges Tuesday.

The charges stem from a series of car break-ins that occurred in the Eden Avenue area, Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said. That night, Arroyo allegedly entered several vehicles before being caught by an area resident parked along the street who was sitting in the vehicle when Arroyo attempted to enter, police said.

“At the time of the attempted break in, the owner of the vehicle was sitting inside the vehicle with a small child,” Southington Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said. “Arroyo saw the owner sitting in the vehicle and he ran from the scene. The owner followed Arroyo as he fled the scene and called the police."

“Officers began to check the area for Arroyo and he was observed by officers looking out of a window of a house on George Street,” he said.

Officers arrested Arroyo and took several items as evidence, including two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses that he had allegedly taken from a nearby vehicle, Dobratz said. The owner reported the glasses missing the next day and they were returned a short time later.

Arroyo is also faces charges stemming from an incident 10 days prior to the break-ins and is facing one charge of disorderly conduct in the case.
