Charges Mounting for Alleged Plantsville Burglar

Police have brought additional charges against a Plantsville man already in custody for a series of burglaries and larcenies in Southington, Avon and Simsbury.

A Plantsville man already in custody following a strong of robberies stretching from Southington to Simsbury is now facing additional charges in two separate cases following thefts in town that occurred earlier this year, police reported Thursday.

David Kirychuk, 27, has been in state custody since an April arrest in Simsbury and was arraigned last week on new charges including two counts of fourth-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, illegal use of a credit card and credit card theft.

Southington police Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said Thursday that the latest charges stem from two separate incidents that occurred in February and March of this year.

“According to the arrest warrant, Kirychuk allegedly burglarized a Southington residence on March 9, 2013, in which jewelry related items were stolen and later found to have been pawned by Kirychuk,” Dobratz said in a press release.

The warrant was served on June 6 as Kirychuk appeared in Bristol Superior Court in relation to thefts when Kirychuk took a loaded 9-mm Smith & Wesson handgun from a house on Charles Street in Southington, part of a series of burglaries that police said occurred in the area on or around April 1.

According to a police report, Kirychuk made off with a wide array of items from the area burglaries including a digital camera, cash, jewelry and military medals.

The 27-year-old is also facing charges for similar incidents including burglaries in Avon and Simsbury, court records show. He is also being investigated for his role in other burglaries in surrounding towns throughout the area.

Police also served a second warrant on Kirychuk during the June 6 court appearance, Dobratz said. A police report said three weeks prior to the March 9 burglary, Kirychuk had stolen his father’s credit card and used it eleven times over a six day period, tallying up charges in excess of $1,100.

His father has since died in what police described as a tragic dirt biking accident in Rocky Hill.

Court records indicated that Kirychuk has also been convicted of previous burglary and larceny charges across the state including a conviction on first-degree larceny in 2010 from a case in Cheshire.

Kirychuk remains in state custody at Hartford Correctional Center in lieu of more than $115,000 in court set bonds, according to the state Department of Correction. He is due back in Bristol Superior Court on the local charges on July 31.
