Cheshire Correctional Inmate Found Dead

Police and corrections officials said the death appears to be a suicide.

State officials are investigating the death of a Middletown man at the Cheshire Coorectional Instution after he was found unconscious in his cell Monday morning.

State police said the initial indication was that the 55-year-old had committed suicide, but an investigation is ongoing.

Corrections officers found the unnamed 55-year-old in his cell with a bed sheet tied as a noose around his neck. He was immediately taken to the , in Southington but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to Brian Garnett, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

Officials said he was the only person in the cell at the time and was serving an 18-year sentence for manslaughter. He has been imprisoned since 2005.

The name of the inmate will be released after officials are able to notify his next of kin, Garnett said.  

The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, according to a press release. Further details were not immediately available.
