Cheshire Man Charged In Local Check Theft Scheme

A Cheshire man is facing various larceny and forgery charges after police said he stole nearly $20,000 over a six-month period in 2010.

A Cheshire man is facing prosecution for the theft of nearly $20,000 after police said he stole 61 checks from a local business over a six-month period and wrote them out to himself.

Joseph Mantini, 47, of 862 Moss Road in Cheshire, was arrested earlier this week and arraigned for one count of first-degree larceny and 61 counts of first-degree forgery. He was released after posting a $2,500 court-set bond, according to staff at Bristol Superior Court.

Mantini had been working for a local nursery between May and November 2010 when he took the checks and cashed them in various amounts, according to a police statement released Thursday. The name of the business he had been working for was not released.

Police said a review of the company’s finances led officials to discover that Mantini had taken $19,758.32. Further details of the case were not immediately a

Mantini could not immediately be reached for comment.

He is due back in Bristol Superior Court on March 23, according to court records, and could present a plea at that time.
