The Southington Fire Department has a great hydrant system which can be used for fighting fires - that is unless they are unreachable because of snow and ice.
Fire trucks carry water to help with responses, officials said, but in the event of a structure fire then there is a need for a larger supply of water to help prevent the spread of flames.
The fire department encourages everyone to stay safe this winter by clearing the hydrants in your neighborhood of snow and providing a three foot radius so firefighters can attach a hose during an emergency.
This regular winter maintenance could save your home and even your life.
