Crackdown on Cell Phone Use While Driving in Southington

The Southington PD is cracking down on motorists who use their cell phones while driving.

A look at the citations being issued by Southington Police, as posted on their Facebook page, it's quick to tell that officers are cracking down on motorists who just can't leave the cell phone alone.

Between March 13 and March 15, officers issued 31 infraction tickets to drivers violating the state's cell phone law, according to the department.

Last summer, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy approved the higher fines as part of an overall effort by the state to cut down on the number of distracted drivers, and distracted driving accidents, in Connecticut.

The new fines went into effect Oct. 1, 2013 and will increase the penalty for using a cell phone in a car from $125 to $150 for the first offense, $250 to $300 for the second offense and $400 to $500 for the third offense.
