Cromwell Man Charged in Southington Sexual Assault

Police said the 20-year-old is facing charges in a 2013 first-degree sexual assault, but details remain scarce.

A Cromwell man is facing charges stemming from a sexual assault incident in Southington, but details of the case remain scarce after the warrant was sealed by a judge at New Britain Superior Court.

Southington police on Thursday served an arrest warrant on Benjamin Hughes, of 17 Hicksville Road in Cromwell, on charged of first-degree sexual assault risk of injury to a minor and fourth-degree sexual assault.

Hughes, 20, was taken into custody without incident and held in lieu of a $250,000 bond, police said. He was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on Friday and remains in state custody, court officials said.

Police indicated that the victim was known to Hughes, but were unable to comment further because the warrant has been sealed under court order, Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said. Court officials said Friday that the warrant would not be unsealed “for at least 14 days.”

Further information was not immediately available on Friday regarding the arrest.
